What We Do
Welcome to Haudenosaunee Development Institute
The Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council (‘HCCC’) has legislated the Haudenosaunee Development Institute (‘HDI’) to represent HCCC interests in the development of lands within areas of Haudenosaunee jurisdiction, including but not limited to the land prescribed by the Haldimand Proclamation and the 1701 Treaty Area.
HDI is tasked to administer a regulatory framework that identifies, registers and monitors development to ensure full compliance with The Great Law and the Ohenton Kawlawds Deckwah.
Operations adhere to the principles and governance structures of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, a traditional alliance comprising of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora nations.

Protect Our Inherit Treaty Rights
We are committed to protecting our inherent treaty rights, as these rights are fundamental to our sovereignty, culture, and connection to the land. By safeguarding these treaty obligations, we ensure that we can continue to exercise our rights to self-determination, maintain stewardship over our traditional territories, and uphold our responsibilities to future generations. These protections are vital for preserving our way of life and ensuring that development occurs in a manner that respects both our legal rights and the natural environment.
Protect Cultural and Heritage Sites
The HDI’s ability to access sacred sites, culturally-significant sites, and traditional places for hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering must not be infringed upon by any development. The HDI seeks to work with developers and regional associations to identify such places well in advance of proposals.
Protect Our Environment
The HDI aims to protect threatened species and ecological communities, particularly when their population viability is at risk due to changes in their landscape. Our primary focus is on nationally endangered or vulnerable species and ecological communities.
Protect Migratory Species and Wetlands:
The HDI is committed to protecting threatened species and ecological communities whose viability is at risk due to landscape changes. Our conservation efforts prioritize survival and recovery, with a focus on preserving habitats and mitigating threats caused by development.
Meet Our Team
The HDI is administered by a dedicated, community-focused team
Reporting
HDI reports and takes direction from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council regularly through monthly meetings. In addition, Chiefs and Clan mothers participate actively in all HDI engagement processes. HDI also reports weekly to the Confederacy Council Chiefs committee which is attended to by all chiefs and clan mothers.
